Beaverton
Non-Handicapped District Tournament
With more high-skilled shooters this session, the Non-Handicapped
tournament was quite an exciting event. Newcomers Kevin Parr and Cedric
Sloan rounded
out this 6-man bracket, which included Jeff Farnsworth, Tony Newman, Buzz
Poleson and Steve Register. Tony Newman gets the day started by thrashing
Jeff Farnsworth
4-0 posting a 1077 – the Highest Shooter Rating ever recorded in
NBS Tournament play. Next, Tony meets the ever-consistent Buzz Poleson
and can
muster no more than a 173. Buzz tosses Tony to the one-loss side quickly
4-1. Kevin Parr starts off nicely beating Steve Register 4-1, only to get
thrown
to the one-loss side after Cedric Sloan bests him 4-2.
On the one-loss side, Tony Newman
continues his poor play, but nobody seems eager to beat him. Steve Register
is unable to get past Tony even though Steve got to the ‘Hill’ 2-1
and got down to his last ball in each of the final 2 games. Tony now faces
Kevin Parr who is shooting much better than his rating. Tony starts to shoot
better, but Kevin is still hot. This battle gets down to ‘Hill-Hill’ and
Kevin should have advanced, but an unfortunate miscue on the 8-ball lets
Tony move on by the skin of his teeth.
The
play is much better in the fight for the ‘Hot Seat’. Cedric
Sloan and Buzz Poleson trade wins all the way to ‘Hill-Hill’. None
of the games extend past two innings save one safety battle in the 6th game.
In the final game, Cedric breaks Buzz’s back with a break and run. Buzz
now has to face
the man who will not die – Tony Newman. This match starts out just as
Tony’s two
previous matches – Tony goes down 2-1 in a race to 3. Tony again forces
the match to ‘Hill-Hill’ and even gets down to the 8-ball, but
a tough cut to the side pocket stands between him and the final match. Tony
barely misses, and Buzz is able to put together a 5-ball run out to face Cedric
one more time. After a long wait on point, Cedric can’t get back
on stroke and Buzz jumps out 4-0 in this extended race to 5. Cedric is
able
to get a
couple of wins, but Buzz puts him down in the 7th game 5-2. Buzz, with
his usual consistent play,
averaged 634 for the tournament – the highest average ever posted
in an NBS tourney! Buzz and Cedric each earn a berth to the Portland Metro
Regional
Non-Handicapped Tournament in May.
Beaverton Handicapped District Tournament
While the high-skilled shooters posted record numbers, the Handicapped
Tourney added a dramatic storyline to the day.
With 60% of the matches going ‘Hill-Hill’ and a final match featuring
the lowest and highest rated players in the bracket, you know there were some
tense moments. Lyman Warnock, coming in with a Shooter Rating of 151 and playing
with a house cue, seemed to be destined to win it all. He meets Bob Elliott,
who despite announcing he was going to be out in 2 matches,
obviously came to play. They took this match ‘Hill-Hill’ and
Bob was able to eke out the win sending Lyman to the one-loss side to a
battle with Cary Prokop for a chance to get to the final match.
Cary
was also shooting well averaging 50 points over his Shooter Rating on the
day, and he didn’t slow down in this match. Unfortunately for Cary,
Lyman put together his best match of the day taking this ‘Hill-Hill’ scuffle
and winning the unenviable honor of facing Bob in the final extended race
to 4. Bob came out on fire in this match and jumps to a 3-0 lead in seven
quick
innings, which included a table run. Bob cooled down, but Lyman was unable
to step up to the challenge, posting his worst match rating of the day,
and retires with a 4-2 spanking. Both Lyman and Bob advance to the Portland
Metro
Regional Handicapped Tournament to be held May 2005.

Eastside NBS Leagues
Handicapped District Tournament
Although Crystal Opoka
never lost a match during league play, she was unable to win a game at
this tournament. In her defense, her opponents were shooting
much higher than their league ratings. Rick Dusa really put it together
and averaged 150 points over his Shooter Rating; Evan Bailey
nearly doubled his rating. It didn’t look like anyone was going to
touch Rick, even though his competition were receiving healthy handicaps,
Rick got
to the ‘Hot Seat’ without losing a single game. In the final
match, Evan was able to put together some good runs as Rick was cooling
down to his
average Shooter Rating. Evan got out to a 3-1 lead in the race to 4 and
despite 2 clean shots at the 8-ball in the 6th game, he loses his lead
and the match
ends up ‘Hill-Hill’. In the final game, Evan can only pocket
one ball and Rick defeats him easily. Rick advances through to the Portland
Metro
Regional Handicapped Tournament to be held May 2005.
Nineteen-year-old Shane Owen will represent Eastside NBS Leagues in the Portland
Metro Regional Non-Handicapped Tournament in May. He advances by obtaining
the highest average Shooter Rating for the League Session. He
averaged 346 over his 7 matches.
