May 22, 2003
Jim Freakes passed away May 22, 2003 after
complications from surgery.
Jim was well known for his interest
in pool. He helped out with the Lower Columbia Pool League by assisting in
any way he was needed. Jim captained many teams and one year led his team
to the league title. Jim was very proud of that accomplishment. Jim will
be missed by his family and friends, but not forgotten.

BCA Expo set for July in 2007
Members favor return
to summer time frame
Colorado Springs, CO – In a special vote
requested by the BCA Board of Directors, Business Members chose July as the
time frame for the International Billiard & Home Recreation Expo, starting
with the 2007 show in Las Vegas. Locations for future BCA Expos are under
review.
Ballots were received and counted by the Colorado Springs law firm of Holme,
Roberts & Owen. The BCA Board of Directors met via conference call on
December 1st to
confirm the membership decision.
“The most important factor in deciding the time and location for the
Expo is
the will of BCA Business Members,” said BCA President John Stransky. “Our
members have indicated a strong preference for July, and the board knew that
definitive action was required in order to move forward with specific locations
and dates beyond 2006.”
Due to the advance planning required by an event of this magnitude, the 2006
Expo has already been scheduled for April 6-8, and will be held at the George
R. Brown Center in Houston, Texas. “The BCA is committed to its membership
and to the success of the billiard industry. Because contracts were signed
earlier this year with the Houston convention center and host hotels, it
is not possible to renegotiate the dates for 2006,” said BCA Executive
Director Stephen D. Ducoff.
The International Billiard & Home Recreation Expo is the world’s
largest business-to-business trade event of its kind, featuring virtually
every major
manufacturer, wholesaler and supplier of billiard and home recreation products
and services. |
Colorado
Springs, CO – The Billiard Congress of America [BCA] is field-
testing a new family billiards format
that combines fun and competition with
charitable fundraising to support medical research. The pilot program is
slated to run in the Northeast next month, under
the direction of Linda Brownstein and Dennis DiPaolo.
The pair has organized a “Family 8-Ball Tournament to Fight Diabetes” in
19
venues across Massachusetts and New Hampshire, where teams of one parent
and one child (age 8-18) will advance
out of semi-final rounds on Saturday, January 15, 2005. The finals will be
held the following Saturday, January 22nd, at the Boston Billiard Club in
Boston, MA.
Players “enter” the preliminaries by
making a donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation [JDRF], and
those who win their semi-final rounds will automatically be entered into
the finals. One winning team from each
location will receive a pair of customcues
and cases by Lucasi Cues, and the grand prize will be a |

addition to a full day of family play to kick off the project, several locations
will be hosting special events to benefit the JDRF. At the finals, Dave Pearson,
the “Ginger Wizard” will give an exhibition of the talents in
speed pool that have earned him multiple listings in the Guinness Book of
World Records.
